Woodworker

Creation is, for me, about transformation: in the piece, in myself and in the viewer. My work concerns emotions and senses rather than verbal or intellectual concepts. My wood studio is on 60-acres that is my home in the Smoky Mountains where I explore my craft in proximity to nature.

My turning focuses on functional and decorative bowls, platters, and vessels. Smaller items include wine stoppers, fan pulls, carved spatulas and spoons. I also make carved and colored laminated mirrors. I work with woods that are indigenous to the Smoky Mountains , and use the lathe in non-symmetrical ways. That way I can attain varying wall thicknesses, off-center and organic forms. Later, I may add texture or color, carve, inlay or abrade so that the viewer experiences the work tactilely as well as visually. All are used to attain a particular mood or create an abstracted version of an object from nature.
